Lisbon Marathon 2016: Every Mile for Everytown
Organized by: Madeleine Greene
EVENT DATE Oct 02, 2016
The 26.2 miles I will run this fall are just under one-third of the 91 Americans killed every single day by gun violence. 91 lives are 91 too many. That’s why I will be leading a fundraising campaign for Everytown for Gun Safety while I train for my first marathon.
Regardless of one’s political beliefs, this fact is undeniable: we don’t have a gun problem - we have several gun problems. From gang violence in cities like our dear Chicago, to acts of terror like that in Orlando, to our nation having the highest gun suicide rate in the world, stories of lives lost to gun violence fill our headlines far too frequently.
While studying abroad in nearby Barcelona, I hope to complete the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in Lisbon, Portugal this October. As I train over the coming months, I will be raising money for Everytown, an essential grassroots organization that works with lawmakers, mothers, victims and their families to create common-sense gun laws that have the power to save lives. My marathon will take place about a month prior to Election Day, a critical window of time for meaningful progress to be made on this issue.
Yesterday we mourned, and today we act. Please help me to reach my fundraising goal so that our country can be one step closer to finally ending this heartbreaking public health crisis.
