Literacy is Life stemmed from my life goal to promote literacy among school-age children. People don't realize the true ramifications of being illiterate. Knowledge is power, and the mission of this organization will be to put books in the hands of as many kids as we can. At a young age my own interest in reading multiplied when people gifted me books of my own. I didnt have immediate access to the libraries in my area, and even now, a lot of schools limit their students access to the library. Reading prompted me to start writing stories, which led to a creative writing scholarship in high school. Now I'm a published author. I know the efforts of certain elders to push a book in my hands saved me. I was able to temporarily escape many difficulties in my personal life, and through words I learned how vast my possibilities were, and still are. We live in an age of technology, so part of Literacy is Life's objective will be to research and promote other reading methods that cater to the learning styles of all children. As a mother of four I realized over time that all children learn differently, and if they aren't being taught correctly, they will not learn to read and write and/or will develop a dislike for education and obtaining knowledge. It systematically kills their desire to pick up a good book because they feel like a failure, when in fact the educational system has failed them. My hope is that Literacy is Life will receive some support from T.I. and Tidal to change that. Thank you.
