My name is Shawna. Since i was 5 yrs old i found myself in and out of foster care, more on than off, to the age of 18. Being in different group homes and foster homes i learned a great amount of things. A lot of what i learned is that when foster children exit the system, a majority of them go to extremes in life. Its either they are amazing at making a great future or they are dealing drugs/getting locked up. There are many stereotypes about foster children, however i was hoping that the statistics for those who succeed would be a little higher as a fact. According to Onthemovebayarea.org Sixty percent (60%) of women who emancipate from foster care become parents within 2.5-4 years after exiting care. Parents with a history of foster care are almost twice as likely as parents with no such history to see their own children placed in foster care or become homeless. Another source, Mark Courtney, reports that only 7% of preteens enter foster care. The majority are entered at 16 and older. Over 70% of ex-foster children reported that they have been homeless at least once. Finally the saddest statistic of them all is that those who are likley to end up in prison or jail is at a startling 80%. Whether its an infant or a 17 year old, foster children need our help. I would like to make sure that we change those stats. I have met so many talented and amazing kids in the system. If we can help them by furthering their life skills education, giving them more mentors, holding more workshops for hands on practice, giving them homes and any other amazing ideas to keep them off the streets i know that it would mean the world to them. It would mean the world to me. Being in foster care is hard and confusing. You are hurt by so many elements, you either act out or shut down. This fundraiser is for them and will go towards so many of those ideas. To let them know that there are people who care and believe in their success. I know i do.
