CROWDRISING SINCE: May 14, 2012
Stuff About Me:

Lauren Albert and Gwendolyn Allen are two passionate young women, dedicated to the alleviation of poverty through effective education in developing countries. Our current focus is in Usa River, a rural village in Northern Tanzania. We assist in funding the children at Huruma Orphnage's private school tuition through benefit events and awareness of sponsorship. Through partnerships with International humanitarian aid organizations and active community participation, we have gathered the attention of numerous schools in Arusha, Tanzania to participate in a teacher-mediated, school-based intervention program called ERASE Stress: Enhancing Resiliency Amongst Students Experiencing Stress in hopes to significantly reduce stress and improve the students' academic performance and pro-social behaviors.

.
This movement was started when a student at McGill University, Lauren Albert, took a semester off to volunteer with Cross Cultural Solutions to embark on an inspirational journey to a rural village in Tanzania: Usa River. Here she discovered a family-run orphanage that captured her heart and drove her to implement various projects so that the Huruma family was able to live sustainably. In collaboration with Beau Soleil's Fondtion Le Solsice in Switzerland, they have taken a grass roots approach and created a successful sustainable model for Lauren and I to follow moving forward. Together, Fondation Le Solstice and Lauren Albert have built a second home in order for Huruma to accept the growing number of children, a two room kitchen and dining room equipped with appliances, a sustainable fruit and vegetable garden, an electric clean water system, a security wall and monthly allowance for the hard working care takers living at Huruma. From the getko, Lauren recognized the academic potential within the children, inspiring her to raise the necessary funds to support the children's private school tuition for three years and counting. Huruma serves as a successful model for intervention and we will strive to move forward in this way with various orphanage homes and educational programs.

Lauren is currently a MA Student at Tel Aviv University, where she has collaborated with her professor, Dr. Rony Berger, to adapt the ERASE Stress intervention program to meet the needs of the taget population in Northern Tanzania. It is designed specifically to train teachers and paraprofessional in assisting their students to cope with daily stress and posttraumtic stress.

This year, Lauren is fortunate to receive help in funding Dr. Berger's program from a woman in Brooklyn, NY.  As a private teacher and a mentor with the Family Center in New York City, Gwendolyn Allen is interested in supporting effective educational initiatives for those dealing with the stress associated with the cycle of poverty. After visiting Usa River, Gwendolyn grew inspired by the amount of growth continuing to nourish and has designed projects to benefit Maua English Medicum School with the help of New York City schools and volunteers.

Gwendolyn has been able to colaberate with local schools in New York City to hold very successful clothing, toy and book drives for Huruma, other orphanages and hospitals. Some of these schools have invited her to spread awareness of educational projects in developing countries through advocacy. The American students are presently proposing some fundraing ideas of thier own, such as making and selling sweet treats  and hosting a Wobble Wace of Toddlers, where families can gather and sponsor their little ones in a short "race" around a gated park.
