BENEFITING: LiveOnNY, Inc.
ORGANIZER: LiveOnNY, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Hello! My name is Abby and I'm fundraising on behalf of LiveOnNY for organ donation.
Why organ donation?
Although I have always had positive thoughts about organ donation (my aunt received a kidney that extended her life almost eight beauitful years before she passed in 1991), I had no idea how limited my understanding was until I started working for LiveOnNY two years ago. As an employee of LiveOnNY, I have been able to see how truly amazing the process of organ donation is, from the unbelievable geneorosity of donor families in their time of tragedy to the unspeakable joy of someone being given the gift of life. The people at LiveOnNY are passionate about this cause and it shows through the endless hours of work required to make these miracles happen.
New York is currently 50th out of 50 states in the percentage of residents who are registered organ donors. There are currently almost 10,000 people on the wait list for an organ, with someone dying every 18 hours. In addition to facilitating donation, LiveOnNY also works to get New Yorkers registered as organ donors to help reduce the waitlist, with hopes of eventually eliminating it.
Why the New York Marathon?
As most of you know, I am a dedicated runner. I ran my first, and only, full marathon in Pittsburgh three years ago with a goal of finishing it in under 4 hours. I missed the mark by 3 minutes. Disappointed, but not discouraged, I turned my focus to half marathons until the perfect marathon opportunity presented itself. (I completed the 2014 Nike Women's Half Marathon in 1:51, and in 2015, I ran back-to-back half marathons in Staten Island and Brooklyn over one weekend.) After taking an extended break to nurse a lingering foot injury, the opportunity presented itself. The New York City marathon is one of the world's biggest marathons and this year, it takes place the day before my birthday. I can think of no better way to celebrate the last day of my 28th year of life than by running 26.2 miles through the boroughs of NYC, my home, finally accomplishing my sub-4 hour goal and raising money for a most deserved organization.
What can you do?
There are many ways you can help support me in this endeavor. I am kindly and humbly asking you to consider any of the following:
- Donate. And know that no donation is too big or too small. Your donation is a fully tax-deductible contribution to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
- Share. Please share my page with your friends, family and social media communities.
- Register. If you aren't already, consider registering to be an organ donor (especially if you live in New York).
- Encourage. Please feel free to text, email or comment on this page with encouragements. I've got a long road and ambitious goal ahead of me--especially post-foot injury. I can't wait to share this journey with you!
