BENEFITING: LiveOnNY, Inc.
ORGANIZER: LiveOnNY, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
This year I will be running the NYC Marathon on Team Donate Life in memory of my father, Dr. James A Cavallaro, who passed away on October 10, 2015. My dad was a heart and kidney transplant recipient. He had a heart transplant in 1987 and a kidney transplant in 1994, both at New York Presbyterian Hospital in NYC. I will also be racing in honor of my 87 year-old grandmother, Theresa Cavallaro, who is my father's living kidney donor. My dad lived a full and happy life with his transplanted heart for over 28 years and his transplanted kidney for over 21. His life story is just one of many that confirms organ donors make a difference. I am humbled to run in support of this worthy cause, in the same city where my dad had his life-saving transplants.
I was just 4 years old when my dad had his heart transplant, and 11 when he had his kidney transplant. I have always known and appreciated the fact that, without these operations, I would not have had a father to raise me. To think that I may have never known or truly realized my father's love is unimaginable. I cannot put into words how grateful I am to have so many memories with my dad to cherish for the rest of my life. My dad is my hero, and his genuine love for life and wisdom have helped shape the person I am today.
As numerous people gathered to pay their respects at my dad’s memorial service, it became clear to me that the positive impact of organ donation reaches beyond the patient and the patient’s immediate family; it radiates into the community. My dad will be remembered by many as a devoted family man, dear friend, and respected dentist. The unique perspective my dad gained from getting a second chance at life helped him to see his life as a true gift, and he never took one day for granted. The many people that have known my dad’s kindness, humor, and courage have also been touched by the selfless generosity of organ donors — an anonymous deceased man who donated his heart, and my grandmother who donated a kidney.
All of the money that is raised on Team Donate Life will benefit LiveOnNY, a federally designated organ procurement organization. LiveOnNY works with10 transplant centers and over 90 hospitals to facilitate organ donation in the New York metropolitan area, including the New York Presbyterian transplant center where my dad had both his transplants. The LiveOnNY team works closely with hospital personnel to recover organs and tissues for transplantation and match donors with recipients. After donation, LiveOnNy continues to offer care and bereavement services for the donor families. Additionally, LiveOnNY works to educate the public and encourage residents to register as organ donors. LiveOnNY is accredited by the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations and is a member of the United Network for Organ Sharing. Please visit the LiveOnNY website, www.liveonny.org, for more information about this organization and organ donation.
I hope you will consider helping me reach my fundraising goal by making a fully tax-deductible contribution to this 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Any amount you are able to give will make a difference.
You may also support organ donation by registering as an organ donor. One organ donor can save up to eight lives, and improve the lives of up to 50 people by donating tissues and corneas. You can register to become an organ donor on your DMV drivers license application/renewal. Another option is to register as an organ donor online. Please see the following resources —
