This is a fundraiser for a scholarship fund I'm creating called the Live Your What Scholarship for high school students. The scholarship provides a week-long summer writing workshop to students in Brooklyn. Next week I'll be speaking at Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School about finding your passion - your "what" - and living it. I'll be talking about writing, my books, challenges I've faced, and how I overcame them. Mostly, I'll be talking about how the key to everything in life is having a passion for something - whether it's writing stories or conducting scientific experiments. Students at Cristo Rey will be given the opportunity to apply for the scholarship by writing a 500-word essay about what they're passionate about.
I will choose a winner, but, ideally, I'd be able to choose more than one (it will be $430 per student and I'm committing to paying one tuition myself - $430 is the base rate for need-based students, as Writopia runs on a sliding scale). The more donors...the more kids get this opportunity! Winners will get to take a week-long writing workshop this summer at Writopia in Brooklyn, choosing which genre they wish to write in. This is a great opportunity for these low-income youth (see below how this opportunity can be extended to even more classes for them).
My husband teaches at this school and has told me time and again how writing is the thing these kids struggle with the most. If you don't know about this amazing school, I hope you check out their website. Despite the challenges these teens face, they all have internships throughout the city, while going to school. The school has a 100% (YES - 100%) college acceptance rate. For this population, this is UNHEARD OF. (For ANY population!!). These kids are amazing and deserve opportunities like this - let's help them make their dreams come true and give them something awesome to put on their college applications.
More on Writopia
This is a great organization that is dedicated to providing opportunities for low-income youth. They told me that once these kids are in the Writopia system, they have the chance to take more and more classes for free because there are internal scholarships provided by generous donors. So, if you help get them in, you're not just providing one summer workshop: you're giving these students the opportunity to have years of writing classes - most likely for FREE. Amazing, right?
