BENEFITING: Alzheimer's Association
EVENT DATE: May 21, 2016
Many of you know or knew our mother, Janet M. O'Shea. And some of you may know that Janet has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. For those of you who know/knew Janet, you know what a force she was. She was kind, brilliant, beautiful, glamorous, and fun! It is sad to say "was" as she is still with us, but many her core qualities seem gone these days. This is part of the disease. The person we love is still with us physically but we have mourned the loss of her in so many ways. There are rare glimpses of her former self. Mom was an intellectual, a talented teacher who spent years as a docent at The MFA Boston. She never left the house looking less than perfect. Now she cannot write, she cannot read, she cannot perform basic cognitive tasks. She fights the basics of hygiene and grooming. My father, 7 yrs her senior and now 87yrs old, is her primary caregiver. I am in awe of how he does it. It is a daily struggle... yet he remembers her fortitude and cherishes his remaining time with her. So much of this breaks our hearts and make us only wish for a cure for this devastating disease. This is why we are dedicating our 1st half marathon to our mother, Janet. We hope to raise money to help find a cure for this heartbreaking disease. Please donate and help us to reach our goal of $6000 in the next two weeks.
