Dear Friends, On Monday I c…
Dear Friends,

On Monday I completed the Boston Marathon, which was a dream come true! After being stopped a half-mile from the finish line in 2013, running down Boylston Street to the tune of thousands of people cheering was truly one of the best moments of my life. I finished in about 4 hours and 43 minutes, slower than I had anticipated, but that was the last thing on my mind as I crossed the finish. It was a beautiful day, and got a little warm towards the end, but everything went smooth and it was awesome to see the city of Boston take back Patriots day. I enjoyed every minute of those 26.2 miles.

Our OneFund team raised about $800K and I am hovering right around $9,000. I was nervous when I accepted my spot on the team in January, knowing I had to raise over $8,000 in just three months, but those nerves quickly went away as family and friends were unbelievably generous through monetary donations & emotional support. I could not pass up the opportunity to come back in 2014 and finish what I started in 2013, this time as a part of something bigger than myself.

I can honestly say that as I look back on not just the past 3 months of fundraising, but the entire year as a whole, it has been the most rewarding experience of my life.

I want to thank you again for your incredibly helpful & generous support that allowed me not only to achieve my dream of completing the Boston Marathon, but to become a better man going forward. I will forever cherish this experience.

Thank you and best wishes,
Sam Shields

Dear Donor, Marathon weeken…
Dear Donor,

Marathon weekend has arrived and I could not be more excited! I am proud to say that I have raised over $8,500!! (soon to be reflected on my Crowdrise page) That amount is well over my $8,000 commitment and with donations still coming in, my $10,000 goal isn’t out of reach either. I am amazed by the generosity of everyone so far and I want to extend another thank you for being a part of that sincere generosity.

I had the privilege to attend the 4-15 tribute this past Tuesday, and was amazed by the upbeat spirit of the victims from last year’s attack. It was so cool to see Jeff Bauman, the Richard family and so many others with smiles on their faces as we honored their courage. I like to think that I, along with all of my teammates & donors have played a small role in turning their lives around from the horror of last year. Tuesday was truly one of the most remarkable days I’ve experienced.

I will be taking my last training run today, and despite some setbacks with leg injuries and a harsh winter, I feel 100% going into the weekend and I don’t think I could be anymore prepared for Monday’s 26.2 mile trot.

If interested, you can track my by downloading the BAA 2014 App and submitting my BIB number, which is: 31930. I start at 11:25AM. Or you can text 31930 to the number 345678. If you’re going to be in Boston that day, please let me know!

Please feel free to share my link as I hope to still hit my goal! Thank you again for the support along the way, I can honestly say this has been the most rewarding experience of my life and Monday has been a day I have been looking forward to for quite some time.

Best Wishes,
Sam

Hello, Today marks 2 months …
Hello,
Today marks 2 months until April 21st, the 118th running of the Boston Marathon. I promised that I would keep you updated on how training and fundraising is progressing, so what better way to do so than to interrupt your busy schedule with a semi-lengthy email that you may or may not bother to read :)
First off, thank you again for your generous donation. You are not only helping me achieve my dream of completing the Boston Marathon, you are helping those who had their lives changed last year recover and return to normalcy. I knew when I accepted my spot on the One Fund team that the daunting task of raising over $8,000 by myself in just 3 months came with a lot of risk. I’m proud to say that just 1 month into my fundraising efforts, with still 2 months to go before race day, I have raised over $4,000 personally (more than halfway to my minimum, and almost halfway to my goal), and our team has raised over $250,000, or quarter of a million bucks (sounds cooler). It’s an incredible feeling to have such great friends, family and colleagues who understand that what the One Fund is doing here is something pretty special. I cannot express how thankful I am for your graciousness thus far.
I get so caught up with planning & executing fundraising efforts that I forget there is still 26.2 miles to be run! Training has had its bumps, but overall I feel as though I am on pace to be ready come Patriots Day. I started training back in October, using a 6 month program. Anyone in the New England area surely knows that this winter has been a bit of a pain (to put it nicely), making training very difficult. I’ve had to settle for mostly treadmill runs after work on weekdays while bundling up & saving my longer outside runs for the weekend. On Saturdays you’ll catch me heading down to Boston around 6:30am to join the One Fund team on the course. It’s been great being able to run Heartbreak Hill and along the route near B.C. & on Comm Ave. as this is surely the most difficult part of the race (miles 17-22). I’ve also dealt with some IT Band issues, but nothing a little massaging and icing can’t fix.
I’ll be running the Half at the Hamptons on Sunday, & will continue to update you on my progress as April 21st approaches! Please don’t hesitate to share my cause with anyone that may be interested as I would like to continue my strong start. Thank you very much for helping me work to achieve my goal while making a difference in some very deserving people’s lives.
