BENEFITING: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
ORGANIZER: LLS Pittsburgh
EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
Hi everyone! My name is Lauren Walker and this upcoming year will be my third time participating in the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. To change things up this year, I have decided to run for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
In May 2015, I began working on a medical oncology floor at UPMC Shadyside with an amazing group of nurses, aides, and physician assistants. We have met many incredible people fighting cancer. We have seen them on their good days and we have helped them make it through their bad days. We have celebrated those who won their battle and have mourned those who lost. My time working with oncology patients has been a truly rewarding experience.
I am running for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to honor one of my favorite patients, James Mateo. When he was admitted for chemotherapy, I could often be found in his room chatting with him and his wife, Amy. They were perfect together. He was vibrant and fun and I will never forget all the long conversations that we had. In April 2016, he sadly lost his battle with lymphoma at age 37, leaving behind his wife and four young children.
I am running this year for a great cause. I am running this year to celebrate a great human being who will never truly know the impact he had on my life. Please consider donating to my fundraiser! Any amount helps! :)
