About the Lakas Mentorship Program:
The Lakas Mentorship Program (LMP) is a community-based grassroots volunteer organization with a mission to empower, support, and connect youth toward a conscious adulthood. Recognizing a need for culturally relevant youth development in the Inland Empire, a group of young professionals and graduate students created LMP in 2012. The program consists of mentorship between high school mentees and college mentors and curriculum on self-awareness, Filipino American studies, college preparation, and leadership. We have also held field trips to college campuses and conferences, a workshop on personal statements, and a career panel.
LMP has grown rapidly in its short existence: 4 mentees in two schools and 7 staff in 2012 to 15 mentees in five schools, 14 staff, and 3 advisors in 2014 with participants from Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Orange counties. Our primary sources of income have been donations from parents and occasional fundraisers. The money we raise will go towards operating expenses such as food, venues, materials, and field trips. Ideally, we'd like to raise enough to offer scholarships to our participants.
