BENEFITING: LEAVE NO VETERAN BEHIND
EVENT DATE: Oct 13, 2013
Leave No Veteran Behind (LNVB) oversees a successful youth safety initiative called: Safe Passage. For four consecutive years, while working in some of America's most violent neighborhoods, LNVB's Safe Passage program has decreased disciplinary actions amongst students and decreased crime before and after school dismissal according to Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Police Department.
At the same time, the University of Chicago and its "5 Essentials Report" shows that LNVB's work has helped create positive learning environments throughout Chicago. Where in their latest report, LNVB's impact has increased students self-reporting that “people in the neighborhood can be trusted” and “I feel safe outside around school and traveling between home and school" every year that they've served the community.
Leave No Veteran Behind is a model of social innovation because its leadership has been able to leverage the same resources allocated to them to decrease youth violence in the City of Chicago to also run one of the most effective Veteran transitional-work programs in the country; distributing more than $1.3 million dollars in wages to returning service members since 2010.
Looking into the future, Leave No Veteran Behind is poised to become a leader with respect to safe guarding thousands of students during the largest school closing in the history of American public education; serving Chicago's Albany Park, Bronzeville, Hermosa, Hyde Park, Kenwood, and Uptown communities during the 2013-2014 school year across the City of Chicago. At the same time, LNVB will use the same resources many times over to also run the largest Veteran transitional-work program in the nation; directly employing more than 100 Veterans every.
