The students at Alain Leroy Locke College Preparatory Academy in Watts are resilient scholar warriors, filled with ambition to succeed. These student leaders are part of student government, Advanced Placement classes, peer counselors, club founders, Silver Key winners and student athletes. One of many reasons that make these students admirable, is their resilience and ambition to succeed despite the odds they face on a daily basis. They experience gang violence, live in foster homes, experience hunger, and immigrate to the United States as unaccompanied minors among other challenges. Alain Leroy Locke College Preparatory Academy is committed to help students succeed. One of many ways we support their ambition to learn is by inviting them to our annual College Tours. Every year, the counseling department puts together a week long trip to approximately twelve different universities in Northern and Southern California. For the 2016-2017 academic school year, one hundred students will be visiting universities for the first time. These universities include San Diego State University, University of California San Diego, University of San Diego, Stanford, University of California Davis, University of California Berkeley, and San Francisco State University. Given that ninety percent of the students at Locke College Prep Academy will be first generation college students, this trip exposes them to the opportunities and challenges of college. From previous College Tours we have found the students return with a renewed desire to push, not only themselves, but also their peers and their families. The students become advocates for higher education and begin to introduce their families to the college atmosphere and its many requirements. As a result, they begin to build a college friendly culture in their household. College Tours is an important trip because most of these students have never traveled outside of South Los Angeles and can therefore not imagine what college life looks like. There warrior scholars are responsible for financing a small portion of this trip, but most of the funding results from fundraisers the school puts together. Unfortunately, many of our families cannot afford to participate in fundraisers to finance the buses, housing, food, and incidentals. We would like to ask for your help funding this year’s College Tours. Every penny counts. Let's help these students reach higher education!
