The luge community, both worldwide and especially in the United States, is a small one. Because of this, once you are a part of it, those around you become a second family. One of our own has been hit with an unimaginable hardship at a heartbreaking young age. While he and his family fight the physical, emotional, and financial battles that come with beating Hodgkin's Lymphoma, as part his luge family we wanted to help make sure he would still get the chance to battle it out with his competitors on the track.
To do this, we, as USA National Team athletes and staff, have rallied together to support Duncan's athletic dream by offering to shave our heads or chop/donate our hair if we get your support through pledges! Recently going through the hair loss stage in the long road of cancer treatment, Duncan now sports a trendy new hairstyle we couldn't resist joining in on!
Evidence of the inspirational resilience and passion of this young athlete is his recent performance at Junior Nationals in Park City. After completing his first round of chemo, Duncan hopped on a plane to Utah to train and compete, coming home with three bronze medals. Seeing this kind of dedication and heart gives me high hopes for the future of a sport that I have grown up in and dedicated my life to.
Knowing that the primary focus of his family is obviously on Duncan's health, and rightly so, we hope to not only support them in beating cancer but also help offset the costs of being an aspiring luger and support him as a fellow athlete.
Please consider supporting our cause. Yes, Duncan is now a victim of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, but that is not who he is. He is an athlete, always will be, and having this battle take away from those dreams would be heartbreaking.
