THE STORY:

Climb Out of the Darkness® is the world’s largest event raising awareness of maternal mental illnesses like postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety & OCD, postpartum PTSD, postpartum psychosis, bipolar/peripartum onset, and pregnancy depression and anxiety.

Climb Out of the Darkness® is held on or near the longest day of the year annually to help shine the most light on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. The event features mothers and others across the globe joining together to climb mountains and hike trails to represent their symbolic rise out of the darkness of maternal mental illness and into the light of hope and recovery.

We can’t wait for Climb Out of the Darkness 2017 to be held on June 24th. Mark your calendars! Help us shine the light of hope with our words and our advocacy efforts, so that our fellow mothers will receive better information and better treatment and their new families will get off to the healthy and strong start they deserve.    The climb in Long Beach will be super special as some of the proceeds will go towards Postpartum Support International and another portion to Transitions in Motherhood whose founder Tara Farajian leads a new mommy support group at Long Beach Memorial Hospital.

The purpose behind our fundraising this year will be to increase awareness of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders in our diverse and dynamic community and gain funding to hold free Spanish postpartum support groups in Long Beach and eventually throughout the South Bay. As of today, there is a large demand for these monolingual groups but not enough support groups. In fact, there is only one free Spanish speaking 4 week series group in all of Long Beach led by Susana Marquez - MeMyselfnMommy.com at El Centro Salud es Cultura.

To join the Long Beach/Seal Beach climb, please add yourself as a team member and invite your friends, family members and colleagues. Details about the Climb: It will actually be a beachwalk. This means that we will meet at Bluff Park (plan to arrive between 8:30-9am) and then walk down to the Beach path. The walk will be a 4 mile walk that will go from 9am-11am.    Kid-friendly event. Bring your strollers or wagons for the kiddos. Street parking is available around the Bluff. Metered parking is available by the Beach path down on Junipero Avenue.
