As most of you know, I spent a summer during college volunteering in Ghana for For One World and have been involved with helping the organization and Ayi Owen International School ever since.
The money I raised last year is now being used to pay for school fees, lunches and supplies for a female Ayi Owen student named Rashida Awudu. Pictured on the right in her school uniform, Rashida recently lost her Father and now her Mother and 5 siblings are being ejected from the family (for reasons based on Ghanaian matrilineal lineage which I don’t really understand). I have pledged to support Rashida's eduation costs through to graduation-- an undertaking which will allow Rashida to stay in school and maintain the standard of life she was used to before these traumatic events.
I'm looking forward to learning more about Rashida over the years and sharing updates with you all. From the look of the picture, she seems like a very serious little scholar! While the impact may be small, being able to sponsor an Ayi Owen student is something I’ve wanted to do for years and it is so exciting to finally be making it happen.
I plan to dedicate this year's funds partially to Rashida and partially to general school support for supplies, infrastructure etc. I deeply appreciate any amount you pitch in, no matter the size, and think of each donation as a wonderful birthday gift. Lastly, I want to give a huge thank you to those who donated last year!
