THE STORY:

Hi lovely people! :D Please consider donating $50, $25, $20, $10 or any amount that you are able to contribute! <3 For reasons why you want to support CYI (or even just something I love dearly), please keep reading. [:

It's that time of year again~ I will be riding in the 11th Annual Chinatown Bike-A-Thon (yay) to raise money for the Chinese Youth Initiative program [and I get to be a guide for the route!].

My Pokemon: Mew!
My goal: $500
If I do a little bit of math... that means if I have...
10 sponsors x $50 or
20 sponsors x $25 or
25 sponsors x $20 or
50 sponsors x $10 or honestly any combination of money you and others are capable of contributing, I can reach my goal.

I believe that CYI offers a really unique space for young people, especially high school students to grow and develop as leaders and members of the community. Young people are allowed to explore leadership, discover and continually develop their own identity, and truly find their voice and power in transforming their community for the better. Few programs provide such a space for growth.

Five years ago, I participated in the summer youth internship program and it’s been a semi-whirlwind of transformation. In the 7 weeks I spent with 7 other interns, we learned about Chinatown & Asian American history, dissected leadership styles, and led our own project to re-vitalize the Chinatown Library Campaign (a campaign to bring back library services to the community). And then the summer ended -- but that wasn’t the end.

In these 5 years, I’ve witnessed this program grow and morph into something brilliantly beautiful. During the school year, CYIers would return to continue working on the library campaign and as each year passed, the new cohort of interns would bring more energy for different projects ranging from a Chinatown Youth Platform to participating in  fighting for a MBTA Youth Pass with the Boston-wide youth coalition, Youth AffordabiliT Coalition (YAC) [btw, YAC won!] and beyond.

CYI was my doorway into working with the community, on the ground, with the actual people. I like to believe that the passion has always been there, but CYI provided a space to delve deeper and explore more opportunities to be involved. It’s an incredibly special type of home to me and others. I don’t think I’ve covered everything but I honestly cannot put words to how much this program means to me. If you have the means, please donate!

With love, Kasey <3

{Some general information about the Bike-A-Thon and the Youth Program}

The 11th Annual Chinatown Bike-A-Thon is scheduled for Saturday, June 20th from 9AM-2PM (Rain Date: June 21st).  The Chinatown Bike-a-thon is a green and healthy fundraiser to support youth leadership and a brighter future in our community. The ride is approximately 16 miles on the Paul Dudley White Bike Path along the Charles River.  It is a family-friendly event that promotes healthy living and culminates in a picnic on the Boston Common.  We are excited to continue to grow our Bike-a-thon and to grow our youth program with your help!

The funds raised from the Chinatown Bike-a-thon directly support Chinese Youth Initiative (CYI). CYI provides internship opportunities to high school aged youth from the Greater Boston area, combining an Asian American Studies curriculum with hands-on community service and organizing projects. Over the past twenty one years, CYI youth have played crucial roles in the campaign for a Chinatown library, voter registration drives, support for immigrant workers’ rights, establishing the first Chinatown Youth Platform, advocating for public transit and much more. CYI graduates have gone on to become teachers, lawyers, planners, artists, community organizers, and entrepreneurs, all working to make a difference in Boston and in the world.
