My name is Vaughan and I am based in Sydney Australia. I will be riding solo by recumbent bicycle from Los Angeles CA to Vancouver BC between April and July of 2016. This is my first long distance cycling tour since 2008 and have decided to use it to contribute to a great cause. The Khaled Hosseini Foundation is my beneficiary of choice on this occasion as I have been a regular donor to KHF for the past 2 years and this seems like an ideal opportunity to make a more significant contribution to the important work they do. Firstly though, I would urge anyone reading this to get a hold of any or all of Khaled Hosseini's books and read them cover to cover. "The Kite Runner", "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and "And The Mountains Echoed" are not only amazing and incredibly powerful stories told masterfully by Mr Hosseini, but they provide a rare insight into the rich and terribly tragic culture of Afghanistan and its people. It is impossible not to feel huge amounts of sympathy and compassion for the Afghanis, women and children in particular, when they are cast so honestly and stoically against a backdrop of suffering and grief that is barely possible to comprehend. I am personally so appalled when people are pitched indiscriminately into untenable disadvantage, for no other reason than for being born at a certain time in a certain place. As easy as it is to feel overwhelmed and so completely helpless in the face of such tragedy, I have been inspired by Mr Hosseini and his intent to make a difference to his people that this is the least I can do to help.
