EVENT DATE: May 15, 2016
ON MAY 15TH, I WILL BE WALKING TO RAISE MONEY FOR AN AWESOME NONPROFIT: FRIENDSHIPWORKS AND I WILL BE WALKING IN MEMORY OF JOSEPHINE.
IN 2004, I joined FriendshipWorks as a volunteer and began meeting with Josephine. We got together about once a week for 7 years until her death. Over time, Josephine and I became very close friends as we took walks together, talked over coffee, shopped at thrift stores and went to an Italian festival as well as many other activities. While I was there as a volunteer to support her, I suspect I gained much more from her than she did from me.
While I do miss Josephine, I have continued visiting elders through the Friendly Visiting program. I am currently meeting with Alice who recently moved in with her daughters (from out of state no less!) and is also learning to live with limited vision. Since we met just a few weeks ago, we don't know each other very well but still enjoy talking over tea and going for walks. And, since I have had limited vision all my life and she is just now losing her vision, we also talk a lot about what it is like to live without much vision and how to do things different than might be done with more vision. I look forward to continue meeting with Alice--hopefully for many years.
Please contribute to FriendshipWorks so that I and many other people may continue to be connected with elders to help deccrease their isolation. THANKS!
