BENEFITING: WATER MISSION
This fundraiser will allow Water Mission, a non-profit Christian engineering organization based out of Charleston, SC, to send a Living Water Treatment System to a community in Mexico called Xanil. A Living Water Treatment System filters bacteria and harmful pollutants out of the local water supply so that the people may have access to safe water in their community. Every year, approximately 3.5 million people die due to lack of safe water or proper sanitation. In fact, fifty percent of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by people suffering from water-related illnesses. By sending a Living Water Treatment System to Xanil, we are one step closer to solving the global water crisis.
Xanil is located in the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico, west of the Mexican-Guatemalan border. This project will serve approximately 2,318 people, and provide immediate access to water in a school, a clinic, a church, and community institutions. There are an estimated 300 houses in the community, with an average of seven people per household.
The Living Water Treatment System costs $25,000 to build and install, and this project has a matching component up to $12,500. This means that for every dollar donated, we are two dollars closer to our goal. While these funds will go towards a Living Water Treatment System for Xanil, Water Mission is also including a sanitation program with this project. A second donor is giving money to send latrines to replace the few unsuitable toilets that the people have (see photos). Once the goal is reached, the people of Xanil will have clean water to drink, cook with, clean with, etc., as well as hygenic latrines to use!
