Love for Liza Brooklyn Half Marathon
Team Member: Callie Clemons
EVENT DATE May 16, 2015
In 2011, our dear friend Liza Haynie Heaton, was diagnosed with a rare cancer called synovial sarcoma. After treating the cancer in 2011, she found out this Thanksgiving that the cancer had returned and that she would not be able to receive any further treatment to save her life due to an obstruction in her intestines. She was given less than a month to live.
After the diagnosis, Liza embraced life and gathered friends and family for a surprise wedding. Since the wedding, Liza's obstruction has cleared and treatment has begun. Inspired by Liza's fighting spirit and example of hope, we have formed the Love for Liza half marathon team at this year's Brooklyn Half Marathon.
Note on the fund: Because synovial sarcoma is such a rare disease, funding for research is scarce. Please help us donate to the Love for Liza Fund at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. The funds will be overseen by Dr. Christian Meyer as the primary investigator and will be used for collaborative basic research leading to discoveries primarily for synovial sarcoma, but also all sarcomas in general. Our goal is to learn more about the disease and discover new, and novel therapies through evaluating gene expressions in samples and looking at immunotherapy options for these patients.
