2014 Ambassador Family: Dustin, Haley, Claire and Caroline Brooks
In August of 2011 Dustin and I became pregnant with our first child. Soon we discovered there were two babies! Our initial excitement was tempered by some frightening news: They were monoamniotic-monochorionic twins, “momo” twins for short. Momo twins are extremely rare and high-risk with only 50% surviving. I couldn’t hold in my tears as Dr. Gordon told us the statistics. We had prayed for so long for a healthy baby. We pulled ourselves together and made a plan. Dr. Gordon’s goal was for me to make it to 32 weeks of pregnancy. Forty weeks is the goal for an uncomplicated pregnancy.
I knew I would be admitted to the antepartum unit to be monitored for several weeks before the babies were born. We planned for me to be admitted at 26 weeks, but I was admitted at 24 with contractions. I spent 54 nights in the antepartum unit at Methodist Hospital of San Antonio trying to maintain my pregnancy. My doctors hoped we would make it to 32 weeks, and we made it to 31 weeks and 6 days. We welcomed Claire and Caroline by a planned C-Section on March 20, 2012. They were so tiny but Claire weighed 4 lbs 2 oz. and Caroline weighed 4 lbs 3 oz. It was a blessing!! We had met our goal among our caretakers, family and friends of “32 & 4”! We wanted 4 pound babies and didn’t want to have them any sooner than 32 weeks.
Immediately following delivery the girls were admitted to the NICU and were placed on oxygen through a nasal CPAP as they struggled to breathe independently. Within hours of delivery we were asked to consent for Surfactant Therapy, known in our house as the “miracle drug”. Immediately following the Surfactant administration, our girls began to breathe without struggle. There were ups and downs and I had severe complications that resulted in a lengthy hospital stay. Ultimately, Claire, Caroline and Mom won the fight and after 82 days in the hospital, we all went home together on April 17th, 2012, 4 weeks to the date from the birth of Claire and Caroline.
We were warned of and learned a lot about the emotional and physical highs and lows of having preemie babies. Through our experience we have gained a true respect for families from all over who have endured complicated pregnancies and premature births. Most importantly, we have been blessed to experience the extraordinary will to live and miracle of life in our girls. We are grateful to the March of Dimes for the development of surfactant therapy, for NICUs themselves and for the education, support programs, research and therapies that saved our daughters’ lives. God has blessed our family and we are honored to be the Ambassador Family this year!

Signature Chefs showcases the culinary talent of local chefs, while raising money to support the mission of the March of Dimes. Each chef is asked to present a signature sampling for event patrons and donate items included in unique packages to be sold during the event auction. Following the live auction program, and after viewing a brief video featuring the ambassador family, guests will have the opportunity to participate in a key component of the event - FUND THE MISSION.
Fund the Mission
Unlike a sponsorship or an auction item, Fund the Mission allows individuals and companies to give a monetary gift directly to the March of Dimes mission as a 100 percent tax deductible donation. Fund the Mission offers guests the opportunity to give at levels from $10,000 to $100. The success of Fund the Mission helps March of Dimes support more mission related initiatives.
