BENEFITING: Children's Heart Foundation
EVENT DATE: Oct 28, 2017
Lucy Kate wrote -I will be tackling tough mudder this October alongside a few good friends to raise money for the incredibly important work of the Childrens Heart Foundation. As many of you already know my brother Alex suffers from a heart defect called congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries. He has had this since birth but unfortunately fell ill may 2016. Thanks to continuing advances in early diagnosis and treatment driven by research, that the British Heart Foundation helped fund, Alex has lived a full and active life. Last year, in May 2016, Alex was admitted to hospital and later found out that his organs were failing and that he was at the advanced heart failure stage. After undergoing extensive assessments it has been revealed that due to the severity of his condition, Alex is not eligible for a heart transplant alone and has recently been added to the heart and lung transplant list. I hope to highlight the importance of becoming a registered organ donor and that your generous donations will help fund further research to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all heart and circulatory diseases, like Alex's. Sadly, on average only four heart-lung transplants are carried out in the UK each year. This is because very few suitable donor organs are available and priority is generally given to people who only need a heart transplant. 22 people die every day while waiting for a transplant due to the shortfall of registered donors and therefore availability of organs, mainly attributed to the lack of consciousness and awareness around the subject. 1 organ donor can save 8 lives and change the lives of more than 50 people. Driven by the shattering circumstances that arose in May 2016 I have set up this page to ask you to donate what you can and to encourage you to register to become an organ donor… because you can't take any of it with you!
