"Hi, this is Jackie. We have $1000 for your child to do something really fun, and/or that will bring him/her some much needed relief. What would your child be interested in, that likely isn't covered by insurance, and that you otherwise might not have the money to pay for or time to seek out?"
That's the gist of my conversation with new families, that I get to make nearly every day. We have paid for: massages, horseback riding, ski lessons, swimming lessons, ice skating lessons, dance classes, art therapy, guitar/piano/cello lessons, ceramics classes, and so, so many more.
The truth is, the work we do is with kids who already have or have had cancer. Finding a "cure" is really, really important to them, and they want to make sure no one else--especially another child--has to go through what they go through. But the effects of already having cancer will be with them for life. Two-thirds of childhood cancer survivors will develop another chronic illness, and they are 15 times more likely to die of a secondary cancer than any single member of society is likely to die of cancer at all.
That's messed up. So what can YOU do, what can WE do to help the kids who need help now, the ones for whom a cure may come too late?
Donate to Lucy's Love Bus. We don't limit families based on their current, past, or future financial means. We don't only help kids who have cancer right now, or those who are "done with cancer."
Because cancer never leaves, and neither does Lucy's Love Bus.
I would love to talk to you more about what we do. Because we're all about connecting kids to therapies that help and don't hurt, and that's a really awesome job to have.
