BENEFITING: Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
There are over 397,000 children in the U.S. living without permanent families.*
11,000 of those children are in New York City's foster care system.**
If you were lucky enough (as I was) to grow up in a safe and loving home, it's hard to imagine what life is like for those without families that are willing or able to care for them. Frequently, the only alternative for children without safe and stable homes is foster care--a system that is notorious for being difficult to navigate, having waitlists years long, and lacking in sufficient support for the children it is meant to serve.
Many of the children who enter the foster care system do so as a result of emotional or physical abuse stemming from a wide range of circumstances, such as substance abuse, poverty, mental illness, or domestic violence. Combine these pre-existing traumas and stressors with the difficulty of finding permanent placement through foster care, and the result is often an overwhelming sense of instability, insecurity, and isolation for children who are already as vulnerable as they can get.
This is where Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) steps in.
CASA provides one-on-one advocacy to help foster care children and youth grow up in safe, permanent, and loving homes where they can thrive. CASA's mission is to protect the needs and well-being of children while in foster care and make certain they are placed in safe and permanent homes as quickly as possible.
CASA-NYC plays a crucial role in assisting New York City’s overburdened Family Court system meet the needs of the city’s most vulnerable population. For many abused children, a dedicated CASA-NYC advocate may be the one constant presence in their lives—perhaps even the only adult who cares for them.
It costs $720 a year for a single advocate to help move a child out of foster care and into a safe and loving permanent placement. My goal this marathon season is to raise enough money for ten advocates to do a year's worth of their invaluable work.
Donate money, donate time, donate whatever you can...
Because every child deserves a home.
