BENEFITING: Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota
EVENT: Grandma's Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: Jun 17, 2017
You can help end youth homelessness in the Duluth region now and in the years to come. Our team of 25 runners will be representing LSS of MN at Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth on June 17th to raise funds for the Center for Changing Lives Duluth. We invite you to help by making a donation. Together, we can support youth experiencing homelessness with the guidance, tools and care they need to succeed.
In greater Duluth, LSS of MN serves 800+ young people every year, making thousands of contacts and providing them with the resources they need to launch into productive, healthy and independent lives.
On any given night, more than 120 youth are without a safe place to stay in the Duluth area. Without help and guidance from a trusted adult, these youth face the frightening possibility of finding shelter wherever they can – in their car, abandoned homes, parking stairwells, open garages and in tents.
Youth experiencing homelessness may come from a range of situations, including:
· A background of low income / poverty.
· A background of abuse, including sexual abuse.
· Parents with a history of chemical abuse or dependency.
Our youth need a central location where they can walk into hope. The new Center for Changing Lives Duluth, opening June 2017, will be a safe place where at-risk youth can find guidance and support, wellness services, life-skills development, educational support, job skill development/mentoring and, for some, short and long-term housing. The central site will allow a holistic approach to services for youth and reduce long-term operating costs for LSS of MN at the same time.
The center is part of an innovative initiative to end youth homelessness in Duluth. LSS of MN has served children and youth for over 100 years in Duluth. We’ve never waited for youth to come to us and will continue to serve kids right where they are: both at the new center and through street, school, and community outreach. We know that ending youth homelessness in Duluth will not be easy. It will take an ongoing community-wide commitment, with strong support from both individuals and organizations. Learn more
