THE STORY:

Five Peer Ministers from our Evangelical Lutheran Church in America campus ministry at the Univeristy of South Dakota will travel along with me, their campus pastor, on an 8-day spring break service-mission trip to Peru, We hope to visit:

1. Cristo Rey Lutheran congregation in Lima (and perhaps a couple other ELCA-linked congregations). This established congregation is an off-shoot of a German-speaking congregation, and is currently served by an ELCA pastor/missionary Dana Nelson. The focus here would be to understand the cultural differences and unique challenges.
2. A learning experience within Achkiy crafts, and a visit to the homes of the women who labor in this Peruvian business. They live nearly 30 minutes from the edge of town, in vast shantytowns where living conditions are harsh. We would ask to reserve time simply to sit in their humble homes and listen to their stories.
3. An overnight bus ride to Huanaco on the other side of the mountains to learn about the experiences of Paz y Esperanza, a justice ministry that is rapidly expanding. The ELCA has missionaries there working in a girls’ home, and we would go to bring hope and healing after abuse. This team approach has nearly 40 Christian professionals from counselors to community advocates who work to be a voice for the voiceless. This part of the trip would include a 2 day visit to Huanaco. Paz y Esperanza is a fine organization, and their justice ministry can be found online both in English and Spanish.
4. Return to Lima and debrief at Cristo Rey while preparing for our return trip to our campus and plan how we will tell our story to students, congregations and donors who supported us.
