Dear Friends, Supporters, Backers, and Fans of Monk Parrots and the Bum Phillips Opera,

Thank you for your continued support of our vision to create original theatre that crosses artistic boundaries and forms uncommon unions.  We couldn’t create the meaningful experiences that bring all types of people together in New York and beyond without your help.

I am reaching out to you today because our not-for-profit theatre company, Monk Parrots, has reached a terrible impasse.  Due to unforeseen budget cuts to state and local grants, the money we were requesting for the Bum Phillips Opera didn’t even reach 50% of our grant proposal asks.  We were also faced with some unexpected technical costs and we are left now with an empty coffer.  While we gathered and saved enough resources to complete the monumental task of mounting Bum Phillips, we are now finding ourselves in the biggest jam so far to date.

At this point, we cannot pay our artists for their time.  We have promised them modest stipends due one month after the show closed and we are finding ourselves in the uncomfortable position of not living up to our initial promise.  This is a huge problem for us.  Artists are the backbone of the work, the people who give the gifts of patience, generosity, and vision both in the rehearsal room and on the stage.  They are our tribe, our workhorses, and our family.  Without them, and YOU, we are not a company, we are simply a name.

The stipends are meager, the hourly rate of pay works out to about $4.50, not including time spent outside of rehearsal learning music, catching up on choreography, or reading and implementing notes for the following rehearsal.  Their work deserves to be recognized not only verbally but monetarily as well.  The way we continue to build and grow our company is largely due in part to the commitment and trust of our artists.

The total amount of money we need to raise, with your help, is $15,000.  Your gift will support our cast, musicians, and designers.  Please consider making a donation.  The deadline to make a tax-deductible gift is Monday, May 19.  No amount is too small!  With your help, our artists can help pay for their upcoming wedding, offset tuition costs, pay rent and utilities, or even hire movers for their upcoming move!

Let’s show our artists what a fantastic asset they are to our community and our work.  They often are the first people to ‘take the hit’ when the money gets tight and I don’t want Monk Parrots to be known as a company that doesn’t value the heart of its work.

Here is how this works:

1.       The credit card you donate with is charged at the time the donation is made.  Transactions are processed through Network for Good and they have the highest security standards.

2.       You will automatically be emailed a tax-deductible receipt via the email you provide at the time of your donation on the site.

3.       If the fundraiser doesn’t reach the fundraising goal, Monk Parrots still receives all donations raised from the fundraiser (less the transaction fee) to support our artistic team.

I am asking as a friend, as a producer, and as a fellow artist.

Please consider helping us, your donations go a long way.
