Did you know that approximately 40% of adults in the greater Hartford region lack basic English literacy skills?
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford (LVGH) trains volunteer tutors to help nearly 850 adults from across Greater Hartford to improve their basic English literacy skills each year. Following a standard, nationally-recognized curriculum, students enroll in personalized, small-group classes in reading, writing, ESOL, math, digital/computer literacy, GED preparation, and more.
Our Impact in 2014 - 2015:
- 467 students improved their basic English literacy skills
- 98% of active students achieved at least one goal (such as finding a better job, reading to one's children, learning to use the computer, etc.
- Two-thirds of students with 12+ hours of classroom instruction showed improvement on test scores
- 235 students used the internet for learning for the first time
We accomplish all of this thanks to the dedication of our 200+ highly trained volunteer tutors (and only seven full-time staff!), and with the support of generous donors like you who help us to keep the lights on and make all of this work possible at our three literacy centers in Hartford, East Hartford, and Bloomfield.
When you give to LVGH, you create hope and opportunity for hundreds of adults and their families in our community.
