THE STORY:

Two days after minor knee surgery, we lost my dear mother, Carmen M. Mannino, to pulmonary embolism on April 11, 2014. If the doctor would have evaluated her for the possiblity of blood clots and prescribed accordingly, my mother would still be with us today.

Please join us on Saturday, June 13, 2015 to kick off the 6th Annual ABWA Walk for Blood Clot Awareness, to benefit the National Blood Clot Alliance. This year’s walk will honor the memory of Victor Perniola.

Check in with us at 9 AM in Foley Square at Lafayette and Duane Streets. The Walk will begin at 10 AM.   The 3 mile walk will travel through lower Manhattan, over the Brooklyn Bridge and back again.

Please set up a fundraising page today and share it with your family, friends and colleagues. Raise $75 or more and you’ll get a special Stop The Clot t-shirt. If you are unable to join us, you can set up a fundraising page and be a “virtual walker,” it’s a great way to support the important work of the NBCA and you’ll also qualify for the t-shirt if you raise a minimum of $75.

Victor Perniola passed away in January from a blood clot at the age of 46. His family believes that, if he had fully understood how dangerous his condition was, his life could have been saved. Victor’s family has joined forces with NBCA and ABWA to support this event and raise awareness about the dangers of blood clots.

Victor was larger than life, because of his huge, giving “happy-go-lucky” spirit, and generous heart. He gave to all he knew, and even to those he did not know through charities, whether it was picking up the check at a restaurant, helping people with their careers, or spoiling his son, niece and nephews. Victor provided comfort, joy, and laughter to everyone around him. Victor and his family grew up in Brooklyn, so a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge is a perfect fit connecting his childhood to his “work family” at Lazard in Manhattan. We are most appreciative to Lazard for their generous sponsorship of this walk.

Our thanks to NBCA Board member and blood clot survivor, Traci Wilkes Smith, for her continuing dedication to organizing this event and to our sponsor, the Association of Black Women Attorneys, New York. This year we also welcome Victor’s sister, Donna Barger, as a volunteer event organizer and we thank her for her commitment to raising awareness about the dangers of blood clots.

In loving memory of a wonderful mother who for many years was both mother and father to my sister and me. She was dedicated to her family, especially her granddaughters whom she spoiled every chance she got. Mom, there's not a day that goes by that we don't think about you.
