BENEFITING: FOOD BANK COALITION OF SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY
EVENT: Hunger Walk + 5k
EVENT DATE: Sep 16, 2017
I often stop and think about how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place. When I do, I try to take a moment to think about those who live here too, but struggle with basic necessities like food and shelter. Many people in our county don't realize the extent of hunger right here at home – over 46,000 SLO County residents are food insecure (that’s 1 in 6!), and 40% of these are children.
Since I began volunteering for the SLO food bank about five years ago, I have consistently been impressed with what they are able to accomplish with limited staff and resources. While you may know about the many weekly food distributions they coordinate as well as the many partners they support in providing meals to those in need, it might be surprising to learn that they also distribute produce harvested by GleanSLO that might otherwise have gone to waste, as well as provide nutrition education and conduct “farmers markets” for children and seniors. For every $1 received the SLO Food Bank can provide $10 worth of food to those in need. Please join me in supporting our local food bank!
I know that there are many worthwhile causes to support these days, both locally, nationally and worldwide, but if there's room in your heart and budget for one more, please consider joining me in helping out in any way you can. If you can make it out to Laguna Lake Park on Saturday, September 16th for the Hunger Walk + 5k, you're sure to have a blast while doing some good, and if not, donations of any size are always appreciated! Volunteers are still needed as well, so check that out if you’re interested.
