Jacinta has two brothers and three sisters and was raised by her hard working mother. Like many Maasai, her father was a herder of livestock and upon his death about four years ago he left his family with a large herd of sheep, goats and cattle.
Soon after her father’s death there was an extreme drought and at one point thirty of their animals died at once. The majority of their animals soon followed leaving the family without a source of income. Her older sister is currently repeating the last year of primary school because she cannot afford to attend secondary school. Jacinta would be in the same situation if it weren’t for Daraja Academy.
