Social Justice Fund Northwest is a foundation working at the frontlines of social change. We leverage the resources of our members to foster significant, long-term social justice solutions throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.
Within the Social Justice Fund, the project that I am working with specifically, the Criminal Justice Giving Project, addresses issues involving the criminalization and marginalization of people of color and low economic status within the criminal justice system and our community at large. We focus on a wide spectrum of issues including racial profiling, police brutality, racial disparities in drug laws, the school to prison pipeline, and the increasing criminalization of immigrants and youth. We aim to organize community members to learn about and examine the intersections of race and class within these systems.
As a Criminal Justice Giving Project member, I have participated in Anti Racism & Classism Trainings, explored the making and screening of grant applications, and learned the important intricacies of fund raising for such a significant cause. I am currently working to raise funds that will be distributed to organizations that are committed to creating long-term solutions to inequalities in the criminal justice system. So far, we have received grant applications from over 25 organizations that are building social, racial, economic, and political equality. This summer, I will participate in site-visits to these organizations to see first-hand how they are working for social change. In August, after site visits and fund raising, we will decide through a democratic process how to distribute the funds we raised to some of these strategic and inspiring grassroots organizations. The more money raised, the more change we can support!
Last year, the 2012 Giving Project Members raised over $100,000 and were able to make grants of $17,000 to 6 different organizations. These organizations worked to provide educational resources inside prisons, to end racial profiling, to establish an Immigrant Rights Center, create a Tribal Guardian Ad Litem program and more! Read more about them here:
This year, our team of 26 Giving Project Members has a combined goal of raising over $130,000! Each member is asked to make a personally meaningful contribution. I made a gift of $450 in May. I came to the decision to give $450 because I knew I wanted to give big and this number felt meaningful to me. Are you willing to give a personally meaningful gift to this cause? Can you match my gift?
Please consider giving a personally meaningful gift to this project.
