THE STORY:

On March 16, 2014, Cameron Gallagher (age 16) completed the Anthem Shamrock Half Marathon in Virginia Beach. At mile 12, Cameron stopped to stretch her legs, looked to her friend Abby and said "Let's Finish This". She finished the race, hugged her best friend, and collapsed into Abby's arms. She had completed her goal. Cameron passed away later at the hospital and her legacy continues to live on. After her death, her parents found plans for a 5k race to bring awareness to teenage depression and anxiety; which Cameron suffered from herself. Cameron's plans included letters to sponsors, a mapped out course, and even speeches she had planned to give. The Cameron Kathleen Gallagher foundation was formed later that year. The year after Cameron's death, I ran the half marathon alongside my best friend Kathleen in memory of her cousin Cameron. My parents looked at me like I was crazy when I brought up the idea. 13.1 miles is more than I've ever raced! Almost five times what I normally run. Days before the race, I doubted myself. "There's no way I'll finish, I barely even trained!". I had even considered not doing it. To keep myself motivated through my decision to run, I reflected on 2 Timothy 4:7. The race went smoothly from mile 1-9, I was amazed at myself for how strong I still felt after 9 miles. At mile 10, I started to run out of steam. I didn't think I could go any longer. I hadn't seen a mile marker in a really long time and had planned to give up. I hadn't seen Kathleen since mile 5 and knew she had probably already passed me. I had planned to call my mom and have her come pick me up on a nearby street. As I was thinking more and more about quitting, I passed a sign with "I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith, and I have finished the race". I believe that God and Cameron knew I'd run right past the sign, and sent me the strength I needed to finish strong. The entire race was filled joy and every racer I ran along side greeted me and wished me luck. Kathleen and I were reunited at the finish line and did it for Cameron. This year I plan to run the race again as a part of the SpeakUp5k Shamrock Race Team. All of the fundraising goes to the Cameron Kathleen Gallagher foundation and helps put on the yearly Speak Up 5k race, and keep the foundation running. This year, the CKG Foundation has a program to help teenagers deal with stress and focus on their goals. Mindfulness Monday is a weekly meditation class that helps teens become aware of their surroundings and relieve stress. Cameron's message has reached the other side of the country in California, where the San Diego Speak Up 5k took place last year. Boone, NC and Tampa, FL have also hosted Speak Up races. Cameron would be very proud of what she's started. And it's only just the beginning. Please consider donating to Maddie's Miles to help me complete my goal and raise awareness. Fight, Finish, Faith
