· Collaborating with other community organizations
The Award Winning MAD* Factory (named best theatre group in Northeast Ohio in 2008), now in it’s twentieth year, is the only organization in Lorain County that offers admission-free family-friendly performances that are of professional quality and teaches theatre year-round, awarding on average $20,000 in scholarship assistance. The MAD* Factory produces two full-length shows each year. In the summer, we produce a musical that is staffed by professional technicians and musicians who work for a meager amount of money as well as professional actors that are not paid a penny but tend to return year after year because of the loving environment and the quality of our productions. We are also unique in that we afford our teens the opportunity to act in a professional, caring setting alongside people who have chosen theatre as a career. We do not have our own performance space and are forced to rent space from Oberlin College or Oberlin High School depending on the show and space availability. Our most recent productions have been “Seussical”, “Urinetown, the Musical”, “The Butler Did It, Singing” and “Once Upon a Mattress”. In the winter/spring we produce a touring show that is based on a popular children’s book. The purpose of these tech-free performances is to take live theatre into many communities affording entire families the opportunity to attend together. Often, it is their first live experience. These shows are performed in church halls, libraries, metroparks and schools where ever we can find a space. Our most recent shows have been “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fair(l)y Stoopid Tales”, “Miss Nelson is Missing!” and “The B.F.G.”(Big Friendly Giant). Anticipated costs for producing these shows are expected to be $25,000. This includes royalties, space rental fees, professional salaries, set-prop-costume materials, and advertising.
