BENEFITING: Achilles International Inc.
EVENT DATE: Jun 28, 2015
I have been a life-long competitive athlete, avid runner, and dancer. My life changed five years ago when I underwent repeat spinal surgery (first one was in January 2005) in order to prevent paralysis in both my legs. Every day I can walk, run, dance, or exercise is a reminder that I must never take the use of my body for granted, and I must treat it with the utmost care it deserves. My injury made me sensitive to the challenges people living with physical disabilities face, and often I can't help but feel that I am just very lucky.
Every year since I had my second surgery, I have a selected a charity race to run in to celebrate another year of health and raise money for a cause that is important to me. And this year is huge because it is my 5 and 10 year surgeries-versary!!!! While initial years were for other important causes, I am so excited to be running the Achilles Hope and Possibility Race for the 3rd year in a row. Across a gorgeous 5 mile course in Central Park, NYC, this event brings together able-bodied athletes and athletes with disabilities to complete the 5 mile run side by side. I cannot put into words how inspirational and meaningful this event is. This race has now become such an important tradition in my life.
I support the mission of Achilles International which is to empower people living with physical disabilities to participate in mainstream competitive sports in order to promote achievement and self-esteem and reduce barriers to living a enriching and fulfilling life. Join me in this year's extra special celebration of health with a small donation. Even $5 will go a long way.
