Madison's community service trip to Fiji
Organized by: Madison Lindenberg
EVENT DATE Jul 08, 2014
Hi. My name is Madison Lindenberg, and I'm a junior at Westlake High School. This summer I want to do something that will have a positive impact on the lives of others. I have been blessed in my life, and I want to give back in a meaningful way. I recently learned of Rustic Pathways and the work they do around the world helping communities in need.
From Rustic Pathways' website: Rustic Pathways is a pioneer in providing superior quality travel and service programs for students and families in some of the world’s most welcoming countries. Rustic Pathways demands professionalism and integrity across all of its operations, insists on quality in all aspects of its programs, and places the safety of its students above all other considerations. We enrich the lives of our students and our staff, benefit the parts of the world we serve, and build cultural bridges that lead to greater global understanding and cooperation.
Rustic Pathways serves countries all over the world, and I've chosen the islands of Fiji in the South Pacific Ocean. Although one may not think first of the Fiji islands when considering families in need, there is a huge disparity in income and quality of life because the largest source of income is tourism, and only a very small percentage of Fijians work in and make any appreciable money from the tourism industry. That leaves a lot of Fijians living in small villages, in poverty, and without a lot of the basic needs we all take for granted.
I will help teach English and computer training in schools, work on environmental sustainability projects, help to build infrastructure and school buildings, and provide local families with home-cooked food. I will share in the daily lives of the local Fijian people - I hope to become part of their lives while I'm there.
Most of my time will be spent with the community service aspect of my trip, but I will also have the opportunity to learn about the country and islands. I will hike to and explore historical sites, secret caves, secluded hot springs, and pristine beaches. This will be a great way to learn about the islands and its history.
My trip will last about two and a half weeks, and I will be traveling with a small group of 14 to 18 year olds from around the world. This trip will change my life and positively impact the families I will be involved with in Fiji. But in order for this to happen, I must first raise sufficient funds to offset part of the overall cost of this community service trip. Your donation, no matter the size, will help me to accomplish my goal and allow me to be able to help those in Fiji who are much less fortunate than us.
Thank you for your consideration.
