Please support the Burns family as we participate in our 2nd annual No Stomach For Cancer Walk in memory & celebration of Jim "The Blade" Burns on Saturday, November, 05, 2016!!
You are able to join us anywhere in the country to walk! Whether it's on a morning jog, evening walk around the block with the family, or while you run your weekend errands! If you would like to join the Burns Family in person, we will be meeting at D'Ann Burns' home at 4PM and walking together around "the circle." Don't forget to wear periwinkle, the color for stomach cancer, through the month of November!
Jim/The Blade/Dad/Papa/The Game Changer lost his battle with stomach cancer on August 09, 2015, only a few months after being diagnosed. My dad fought hard and attempted surgery, underwent radiation and advanced chemotherapy, and was open to alternative dietary options and other alternative medical procedures. During his illness, my dad maintained his relationships with his family, worked to the best of his ability, and continued his daily routine of errands, attending his grandson's soccer games, and giving everyone individualized attention!
According to No Stomach For Cancer, Stomach cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide & the fifth leading cause of cancer worldwide! Despite these facts, funding for stomach cancer research makes up only about 0.5% of the National Cancer Institute's research budget!
No Stomach For Cancer is a non-profit organization with a mission to end stomach cancer! This is my family's 2nd consecutive year participating in the walk and fundraising for this amazing organization! Last year my family raised $4,540 with the help of family, friends, and my dad's coworkers!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
No Stomach For Cancer's mission is "to support research and unite the caring power of people worldwide affected by stomach cancer."
The key priorities of No Stomach For Cancer include:
Advance awareness & education about stomach cancer, including Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer (HDGC)
Establish & maintain a network of support for affected families
Support research efforts for screening, early detection, treatment, and prevention of stomach cancer
Our main goal is to raise awareness in order to promote early detection, educate the public, and ultimately save lives in the process! Our second goal is to raise money for No Stomach For Cancer to increase the funding available for research, education, and support! Finally, and most importantly, we do all this to honor my dad's memory as a family every year!
This annual walk and fundraiser is for those that continue to struggle & fight stomach cancer. For those that have gone too soon & the families they left behind. For my dad, who is forever in our hearts and who we are so proud of.
Please donate what you can & spread awareness where you can!
With all our love, hope, & gratitude,
Maggie Smith & the Rest of the Burns Family
