THE STORY:

Maggie Makhanda fled to the United States during the apartheid era in the sixties as a political refugee from South Africa. She was politically active in the women's division of the Pan Africanist Congress. She attended Syracuse University and received her bachelor of science degree at the University of Pittsburgh while in exile.
Maggie unexpectedly suffered heart failure that lead to her home going July 17th, 2014.
She is survived by three children, twelve grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
