On Sunday, December 18th, 2016, I'll run the Festival of Lights half marathon here in Brooklyn, NY. I've been training for a few months and am excited about the run! I'd like to make it a little more significant, though, and I can do that with your help. This is a confusing and overwhelming moment in American life. We are facing a hugely uncertain future as the reality of the presidential election sets in. I'm experiencing a great deal of anxiety, energy, nerves, worry, and shock in the immediate aftermath. I feel a deep responsibility to channel those feelings and energy into something positive and constructive that benefits those who are most vulnerable. I've followed the work of the Children's Defense Fund since I was a student at Grinnell College in 2000 and Marian Wright Edelman (founder of CDF) spoke on campus. She was such a motivational force that I joined along on the small trip she hosted to Des Moines following her talk, to see work on the ground that was happening and that needed support. At the time, health insurance for children was at the top of the priority list. We visited two sites that remain etched in my memory: Blank Children's Hospital, and a community outreach center in one of Des Moines's poorer neighborhoods. It was an open door into the immediate needs of children right where we lived, in Iowa. Still, and perhaps even more so today, there are children everywhere around us who need assistance with education, housing, hunger, health care, and having the best start they can in life. I'm a firm believer that he early years build the foundation for the rest of our lives, and are some of the most important. I hope you'll join me in supporting CDF as I run this half marathon. I hope to find many more ways in the future to channel my energy and efforts toward good as we chart this new uncertain path.
