THE STORY:

Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless Inc wrote -

Our Coalition provides a number of programs to assist those who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. One of these programs is A Bed for Every Child.

It is hard for most of us to believe that when night falls, there are children who don’t have a bed to sleep in. Yet, that is the stark reality for thousands. It is simple – it is an economic issue. Their parents are just too poor to purchase a bed for them.

A good night’s sleep has a major effect on a child’s ability to come to school prepared to learn; falling behind in school due to a lack of sleep can have negative long term consequences on a student’s education and future. A proven pathway out of poverty is to ensure low-income children receive an education that will allow them to graduate from high school. To do this, we have to give these children the tools they need to succeed. One of these tools is a bed.

Funds raised for A Bed for Every Child will purchase a twin mattress, bed frame and linens for each student referred to us by our partners. A Bed for Every Child launched in 2012 and has provided 2,900 beds (and counting) to children throughout Massachusetts. This initiative has an immediate and positive impact on low-income children.

More about the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless:

We advocate for people experiencing homelessness or those at risk of homelessness in areas of public policy, including but not limited to: the availability of decent, accessible, affordable housing; adequate income maintenance programs; medical care; mental health services; social services; job training and employment

We develop and maintain a network of members and supporters, and to provide technical assistance and coordination through our policy committees

We provide public education about the problem of homelessness and its solution:

We organize people experiencing homelessness in order to empower them to advocate for themselves in public policy matters, and to assume a significant role in the decision making structure of the Coalition

We advocate for legislation that will be supportive of the needs of people experiencing homelessness or those at risk of homelessness

We operate a Furniture Bank to assist households in moving from shelters to homes of their own, and to provide material assistance to programs which serve homeless people
