My name is Maia Askew, I am 18 years old, from South Central Los Angeles. Where I'm from not many young adults pursue a higher education for many reasons. Fortunately, a school in N.Y. offered me an opportunity to attend under the major of my dreams. Alas, without enough scholarships, I will not be able to attend. I came across the Perlman Foundation Scholarship with the hopes that you all could help me afford school. Working two jobs and helping my mother provide for three other children after my father passed has been my biggest accomplishment so far. I was able to maintain good grades in school and be a role model to my younger siblings. I am proud to be the oldest and show them that they can be in my footsteps if they stay in school. My passion for medicine has kept me driven to stay in school. I want to use my education to provide health services to my community and those of others less fortunate.
