Maine Mobile Syringe Exchange
Organized by: Timothy Cheney
Chooper's Guide and the Choopers Foundation is committed to supporting all Harm Reduction Initiatives and to elevating the awareness of the necessity of these life saving programs. Syringe Exchange/Sterile Syringe Programs (SSPS) aka Needle Exchange Programs are crucial in preventing the transmission of blood borne diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C.
Maine has the highest per capita opioid abuse and addiction rate in the United States and recently has been severely impacted by the current Heroin epidemic. Maine has no state funding for syringe exchange programs and the Federal Government halted funding of SSP's in 2011.
Currently, there are several syringe exchange programs in Maine (Bangor, Lewiston) , Augusta and Portland) however many of the potential clients of these resources live in rural areas and have no access to these life saving services.
All funds will be used to purchase a mobile unit for syringe exchange and supplies., The mobile unit will also make available Hepatitis C testing and referral and addiction treatment related information and referral.
