BENEFITING: Make It Right Foundation
ORGANIZER: Make It Right Foundation
I am participating in the Crescent City Classic this year for the second time ever, in support of the impact that the Make it Right organization is having in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward, devastated by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, and in the days following.
I had a house flooded with 10 feet of water in Katrina - but I consider myself lucky in comparison to the great majority of the New Orleanians who lived in the Lower 9. For one, I had the opportunity to evacuate the city, and so watched it from afar, rather than trapped in my home, which was the situation that many in the Lower 9 found themselves in. Also, I was 28 at the time, and had lived in my house for only 10 months - so I had not accumulated a lifetime of memories that were washed away, as was the case for many in the Lower 9 who had to start their whole lives over again with scarce resources. Lastly - I had INSURANCE which paid me out for the loss of my house. The Lower 9 had one of the highest rates of home ownership in the city - houses that had been passed down from generation to generation - that were family-owned. If you don't have a mortgage - you don't have any requirement to get homeowners or flood insurance. Due to widespread poverty in the Lower 9 - many people had no insurance and are still to this day struggling to rebuild their homes & lives.
Make it Right has done incredible work in building, since 2007, over 100 homes that have re-housed citizens of the Lower 9 who were impacted by Katrina.
I am doing the Crescent City Classic on April 4 in support of their work. Please help me with a donation of $5, $10, $50, $100 - whatever you could spare - in supporting Make it Right through sponsoring my run!
