Make Promises Happen Neuromuscular Camp
Organized by: Amy Anderson
This special camp is run totally by volunteers and has no major organization providing funding. It is up to those of us who volunteer as counselors at this camp to make sure every camper who wants to attend is able to regardless of ability to pay. It costs $550 per camper and I would like to be able to sponsor 10 campers. This summer, from July 18th-24th, Make Promises Happen will be having its fifth annual summer camp for young adults with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases. John “Happy” Griffin is full time teacher and coach in Texas public schools and his wife, Dr. Jamie Griffin is a school psychologist. They started the adult neuromuscular camp in order to give these young adults what many would tell you is a week of “life without limits.” They along with countless other volunteers and donors spend their summer organizing, running, and raising money for scholarships and meals in order to give these individuals the best week of their year, each year. This is not a typical summer camp, but a summer camp designed to give those with physical disabilities a week of no limits. At this camp, using a wheelchair is the norm and ventilators are a common sight. At camp, all the activities are specially adapted so that campers of all physical ability levels can participate. From swimming and fishing to paintball, soccer and zip lines, there are no limits. Many individuals may ask how they can help. The first thing we need are volunteers who can spend the week at camp to assist our campers with their activities. We provide one-to-one counselor/camper pairing and complete training for all volunteers. We are always looking for motivated individuals to help us. Counselors ages range from 16 all the way to “I’m not sharing my age" and make a huge difference in helping the campers get the most out of the camp experience. Many individuals cannot take off a week from work, but would like to help in some other way. We have a need for scholarships for the campers to attend camp. The cost of camp this year is $550 per camper. We also are in need of donations for food and supplies for the camp such as non-latex medical gloves, bendable straws, long zip ties, sunscreen and bug spray. Thank you for any assistance you can offer!
