Transforming Youth, Organizing Communities for Change, Creating A Better World!
OVERVIEW: The Making A Change Group was started in 2004 by its founder, Cory Long, as a mentoring program in the city of Chester. In its early conception, the program was supported by partnerships with Chester Police Activities Leagues, Chester High School, Chester Community Charter School, United Way of Southeastern PA, and Crozer-Keystone's Chester Youth Collaborative. Through these partnerships, MAC Group or Team MAC as the youth affectionately call it, Cory and students who served as Mentees received mini grants, technical support, and training's to facilitate the youth mentoring and developmental program in schools and community centers throughout Chester. The program has mentored over 200 students since its beginning and continues to reach more. One of the most influential trainings that helped shape the methodology for Team Mac is the 40 Developmental Assets. A research based survey conducted by the Search Institute of Minnesota in 2005. By adding these developmental assets to a young person’s life, you can significantly reduce the level of at-risk behavior they could potentially partake in such as drugs, alcohol, and promiscuity. In addition to mentoring programs and youth breakfast summits, Team Mac also would host skating outreach events and bring special guest speakers to encourage model positive attitudes, behaviors, and even spirituality and Faith in God during opportune seasons such as Easter and Christmas. Help spread the word!
