THE STORY:

Making West Point Community Clean and Green ____________________________________________________ CREATING AWARENESS AND EDUCATING COMMUNITIES TO KEEP THE ENVIRONMENT CLEAN AND GREEN It Takes A Village Africa, Inc. (ITAVA), is seeking funding to raise awareness among young people and community members on keeping the environment safe and clean in the densely populated West Point Community of central Monrovia with over 70,000 inhabitants. It will cost an estimated total budget of Seven Thousand Five Hundred ($7,500.00) United States Dollars to implement this project engaging over 100 young people. Making West Point Clean and Green Lead Organization It Takes A Village Africa, Inc. Support A World at School Global Youth Ambassadors Beneficiaries: Residents of West Point Township Partners • A World At School Global Youth Ambassadors • Hope for Destitute Kids Liberia Duration The project will take 6 months Budget US$7,500 no funding sources have been identified (West Point Township Council has no funds for this project); the above named youth organizations have agreed to provide their time for free. Theme Keeping Our Environment Clean and Green Priority Issue Creating awareness on solid waste disposal and beautification Goal The goal is to re-awaken a sense of pride in their surroundings among the residents of West Point Township Objectives 1. Raise the level of awareness among villagers about the dumping of waste and littering 2. Involve residents in cleaning up around their houses and in public places 3. Have Grand Bay enter the ‘Best Kept Community’ competition Activities • Create a photo mural showing the illegal dumping and dirty places in our community and display it in the community center • Hold several town hall meetings in the community center to display the mural, discuss the problem, and review actions and progress • Create fliers each month giving people information on where to take their waste and including ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos • Purchase 55 gal oil drums, paint them and place them in public places • Involve the media, invite media to town hall meetings to display the mural, provide articles to newspaper, run some radio spots, take video footage (minimum 60-minutes) • Outreach to other communities invite Community Councils from at least two adjacent communities to some of the meetings • Carry out a questionnaire survey of at least 50 residents before the project starts and at the end of the “Best Kept Community” competition Action Needed We need to fully discuss the proposal with the Community Council and the Solid Waste Management Authority; and to get written commitments from the other youth organizations that they will take part.
