The USDA has defined the East End of Amsterdam as a "food desert." Food deserts can be described as geographic areas where residents’ access to affordable, healthy food options (especially fresh fruits and vegetables) is restricted or nonexistent due to the absence of grocery stores within convenient traveling distance. Not only a food desert, it is a play desert as well. To rectify this situation we have created a Community Garden, located in the backyard of an old Church at 303 East Main. Not only do we teach children how to grow nutritious food, we have classes on cooking, a tutoring program, nature based arts and crafts and a 4H Club. Currently, one of our area youth, an Eagle Scout in combination with our 4H Club are raising funds to build an outdoor pavilion, for teaching on very hot days, add some picnic tables improve our soil quality and purchase some new garden tools.
