A group of awesome girlfriends (Angela, Stephanie, and the mother daughter travel writing duo Julia and Anne Dimon) are getting together to tackle the Malibu International Marathon this November 11th.
Our team of intrepid runners will dominate this 13.1 mile ocean run, speeding past beautiful cliffs, rugged coastlines and million dollar mansions. In addition to challenging ourselves, we'll also be raising money for an important cause - Malaria.
Malaria is an infectious blood disease caused by a parasite that is transmitted from one human to another by the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Every minute a child dies of malaria, making it one of the top three killers of children globally. Malaria kills 665,000 people each year most of them children under 5 and pregnant women in Africa. Yet it’s an entirely preventable and treatable disease. No one should die from a mosquito bite. So the girls are fundraising...to make Malaria No More!
For those who might not know, I (Travel Junkie Julia) got malaria when backpacking through East Africa. Imagine the worst flu combined with the worst hangover ever. Lemme tell ya...it really sucks. Malaria symptoms, which often appear about 9 to 14 days after the infectious mosquito bite, include fever, headache, vomiting and other flu-like symptoms. If drugs are not available or the parasites are resistant to them, the infection can lead to coma, life-threatening anemia, and death.
Luckily, since I caught it early, had access to health care and the money to afford medicine, I healed quickly but sadly, this is not true for everyone. Organizations like Malaria No More are working to make sure that every family in Africa has access to the tools they need to prevent, diagnose and treat malaria. Let's help them out!
Please support our first half-marathon, by donating generously to some great gals, running for a great cause.
Thank you!! Julia
