THE STORY:

The Oklahoma Christian Nursing Program has a Health Care Missions and Christian Services course to help teach service to others. The past four years, OC has taken a group of nursing students to Honduras for a 2½-week mission. The goal of the trip is to provide Hondurans with services for mental, physical, and spiritual growth. This coming summer I have the opportunity to travel to Honduras with my Nursing class to use what I have learned so far to help those who need physical or spiritual healing.

While in Honduras, my nursing class will provide services to the children in the rural mountain schools by promoting physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Some of the topics I will be educating these children about include building self-esteem, good nutritional habits, good dentition, as well as the prevention of drug abuse and adolescent pregnancy. While in the mountains, we will also provide health care services to the rural population, which includes diabetic screenings, medication administration, referral assessments, and wound healing.

Our nursing department will be stationed in the small city of Catacamas where we will work with the Church of Christ-based clinic that serves the city’s population. Our work with the clinic includes education at the local schools, obstetric health, and overall physical health. We also work with the men and women at CEREPA, the local drug and alcohol abuse institution, helping to build spiritual growth and self-esteem. And finally, we spend time at the hospital in Juticulpa. This is mostly observational, in which we observe the similarities and differences in the USA’s healthcare and healthcare in a third-world country. However, we do provide care similar to what a nurse aid or tech would. We also use the time in Juticulpa, to provide education such as initial trauma treatment and CPR to the Honduran nurses working in the hospital.

This mission is also a great opportunity for personal growth. I cannot wait to take what I have learned in the Oklahoma Christian nursing program thus far and put it to work for the Lord.

What I am asking for now is your support. Whether that is a donation to help aid in the costs I will need to raise for my travel fee, to buy medical supplies for the mission, or your prayers, all would come with great appreciation. We, as a nursing class, want to show Christ in everything we do as we travel and prayer is one way we will be able to do so. Either way you choose to support us will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much for your time and support as I, and the rest of my nursing class, prepare to go on this life-changing mission trip!

Blessings,
Mallory Mager
